On October 13, 2024, Frances Widdowson interviewed Trevor Tomesh, a former faculty member at the University of Regina, for “The University of Regina Rumble” documentary.
Three excerpts from this video were used in “The University of Regina Rumble” documentary.
Tomesh’s troubles began on February 14, 2020, when the University of Regina sent out a message encouraging a “Round Dance in Solidarity with Wet’suwet’en”.
This led Tomesh to post the following Tweet.
Eventually this would be screen captured and used to instigate a twitter mob against him.
Below are more examples of email from the University of Regina and the University of Regina Faculty Association. Tomesh maintains that these violate the principle of institutional neutrality, resulting is people being “afraid to say the wrong thing” at the University of Regina.
On February 21, 2020, when the University of Regina Faculty Association sent its members an email saying that it “supports the Wet’suwet’en Nation” and that it “urges government leaders to take action to ensure a peaceful resolution that ensures the inherent rights of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs over their traditional territories are honoured and respected”.
On February 26, 2020, a University of Regina representative sent out an email encouraging a “walk out for Wet’suwet’en”.
On November 26, 2021, the University of Regina forwarded a “letter of support of Wet’suwet’en land defenders” and encouraged faculty members to add their name and affiliation to it.
On November 27, 2021, the University of Regina sent out a notification for a “Support rally for Wet’suwet’en today”.
