On June 14, 2021, the Provost of the University of the Fraser Valley, Dr. James Mandigo, sent out a message discussing “the recent discovery of the remains of children at the Kamloops Indian Residential School”, and how this was evidence of “the genocide committed against Indigenous people”.

A similar statement was released by the President of Simon Fraser University – Joy Johnson.

While this could be explained by the hysteria that unfolded and the fact that Sarah Beaulieu – a professor at this university – had stated that “unmarked graves” had not been discovered and it was only with excavations that there could be confirmation of remains – the “LibGuides” for “residential schools” continues to talk today about “the remains of 215 children [that] were found”. These are the first words that students read when they are researching this area.

The UFV Library also has “Adam Olsen’s statement on #215Children” posted as one of the “videos” for students studying the residential schools. No correction is visible anywhere.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies at Simon Fraser University again referred to the “215” on September 22, 2021.

This continued in October. On October 4, 2021, for example, this article was posted from SFU News.

A similar story appeared on January 4, 2022.

The University of the Fraser Valley and Simon Fraser University need to publicly retract all statements and materials about the “215 children” found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. To not do so is to engage engage in educational malpractice, misleading faculty, students, and the public.
